Council Tax A Guide to Your Bill

Those of you experiencing a 'single person discount review' who have been falsely told that your records show you are receiving a discount because you live alone, or whose council is threatening to cancel your discount if you do not live alone may find this booklet useful.  Though out of date in some respects, on discretionary discounts, on the 25% discount and on liability this is still a useful guide.

For guidance on what the Local Government Ombudsman can and cannot do, see here.

You can complain if your council provides you will misleading or upsetting information, and the more of you who do this, the better.

Specifically, the LGO has already criticised councils for telling people they have to 'register' for council tax and that if they have not registered they have done something wrong.  There is no such thing as a council tax register.
